For my research project, I have chosen my topic to be identifying organizational support for personal crises and health issues. I am going to be focused on what type of programs companies should offer to their employees regarding mental health and physical health as well as insurances. I have chosen two articles that I think will help me in this project. The first article talks about what types of policies and insurance are state mandated and which ones the company provides in health insurance. This will be helpful to me because it lists what companies are required to give their employees according to the state, which I will mainly just be focusing on Virginia for this topic. This article narrows down what benefits are missing for the employees and what they all legally have to have. My second article talks about mental health and why mental health should be included in companies insurance and benefits. This article will help me prove my point of the importance of mental health and why it should be tied in with health insurance. Mental health is not something people think of when it comes to support or insurance so I think being able to shine a light on that would be a good point for my project.
This topic is worth exploring because there are so many different rules and regulations for companies to give out insurance and support to their employees for crises that happen out of their control. Some companies only give out a certain amount of emergency pay but what happens when someone has to take care of their sick child for more than a week? They would not be able to cover the costs. This topic is important to me because when my dad was going through chemo, my mom had to be the sole caretaker of him for months and ended up having to quit her job because they did not allow her to miss more than a week of work. This put my family in a really difficult situation where we were struggling with my fathers sickness while also struggling with money and the only help we got was from friends and family. Nobody should have to go through that, especially if it is an unpredicted situation. This project is worth exploring because a lot of people do not get the support they need from their employers during a crisis, which ultimately leaves them jobless and could also leave them into worse decisions to get money when they feel like they are backed into a corner for help.
With researching this topic already, I have learned that there are certain laws companies have to follow regarding health issues and personal crises, but a lot of employees are unaware of them so they do not know if their employer is taking advantage. In this project, I plan to highlight those rules and also provide rules that I think companies should follow or enforce to help their employees. The question I have is should I only choose to focus on one topic like mental health or physical health or should I talk about both of them and tie them together.
